* * *

I can’t even keep track of how many times we’ve called by now. But it’s been over two hours, non-stop calls between myself and Bex alternating back and forth while Nato continues looking for any leads online.

We’re still going, but I’m painfully losing hope as I tap the same number I’ve dialed countless times before now. I’m not expecting anything different this time, so I groan loudly in frustration when the number goes to the same irritating voicemail again. Bex is sitting against the wall on the other side of the room, but I hear her head thud back as she sighs and begins standing up. I can feel her energy of defeat, but I’m not ready just yet, so I hold my hand up between us before she reaches me.

“Wait, okay? Just once more.” I say as I try to pull out every fiber of determination I can through my voice. Bex doesn’t respond and neither does Nato, but I glance down and tap the number again as it rings out from the speaker of my phone.

Ring. Ring. Ring.

My heart stops in the next instant, halting in my chest when I hear the quiet sound of laughter on the line. “She’s done, dude,” some guy says in the background. He sounds farther away, and I can barely make out the words as he says. “Nah, man. Leave her there,” The one on the phone calls out, as if they don’t realize the call has been picked up yet. But his tone changes quickly when he speaks to us directly. “For fuck sake, I swear to God. Whoever the fuck you are, if you call this number again, I will find you and shoot you in the goddamn head. Do you hear me? Leave me the fuck alone.” His voice is angry hot, and the threat sparks through the phone like electricity.

Only it doesn’t even begin to have the effect he is surely looking for.

“Gotchya,” I bite out, just as I glance to Nato and see him raise his fist in a thumbs up, indicating we have exactly what we need. I tap end on the call before he can answer, and just as Nato scribbles the address down on a piece of paper, Bex is rushing up beside me and pulling out the keys.

“Be careful,” Nato says as he stands up. “Don’t make me have to see any of you on the fucking news, got it?”

I don’t acknowledge his comment, because I have no idea what we’re walking into. And I have no idea how I’ll respond. “Thank you for this. I know it was a big ask and you risk a lot every time you come out of the shadows,” I tell him instead, turning on my heels when he nods a silent goodbye. Bex and I begin rushing out of the basement and up the stairs, running through the small book store before racing out the door and toward our Bronco.

I jump in the driver’s seat this time while Bex sits in the passenger seat.
